What is workplace EV charging?

Workplace EV charging is a system where employers install charging stations in their car park(s) for a variety of purposes:

• Visitor and customer charging: Similarly, EV charging could be offered to visitors to provide a hospitable welcome.
• Company vehicle or fleet charging: Larger businesses may have invested in a fleet of electric vehicles that rely on charge points.

For all the reasons above, workplace EV charging points are increasingly common among business across the UK.

Charging points come in various sizes to suit different needs, typically:

• Fast chargers (7kW-22kW): ideal for employees and visitors.
• Rapid chargers (50kW and above): ideal for company vehicles and fleets.

Smart chargers can align vehicle charging with off-peak times to benefit from lower unit rates.

How much do workplace EV charging points cost to install?

Workplace EV charging points cost approximately £1000-£1500 each, plus VAT, to install, according to the RAC, before taking grants and government-backed schemes into account.

The cost depends on the number of charges, the make and model, the location and foundations of the charging station, and the installation itself.

Installation is only part of the overall investment. Businesses should also consider how chargers will be used, ongoing electricity costs and whether charging will be offered free of charge or as a paid service.

The cost of electricity per kWh is 25.9p, according to charging software company Fuuse, up to 50% cheaper than public AC charging. This works out at £10.36 to fully charge an average 40kWh car.

It is your choice whether to absorb the costs as a benefit to your employees and visitors or you can choose to pass costs along to generate an additional revenue stream.

Which grants can help fund workplace EV charging stations?

This may be a great opportunity to invest in workplace EV charging stations due to the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) currently being offered by the government. But the window to apply is closing.

The WCS provides support towards the cost of installing up to 40 EV charge points for businesses, charities, public sector organisations and small accommodation businesses

The scheme covers up to 75% of the total costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints (including VAT), capped at a maximum of:

• £500 per socket
• 40 sockets across all sites per applicant

The scheme was extended for a final year with a deadline of 31^st March 2027.
