There’s only one number that truly matters to most small and medium business owners: the big one next to the pound sign.
But it’s helpful to know some of the details found on any given bill. You may be asked by your supplier to find certain codes and numbers, and knowing where they are can reduce the risk of administrative errors that could hold up your supply.
Your MPAN and MPRN numbers are crucial identifiers for your supply and come packed with hidden information you may find useful to know. Well, once you can locate them.
In this article:
- Learn what your MPAN and MPRN are.
- Understand what makes up an MPAN/MPRN.
- Discover how reading your MPAN/MPRN can help you understand your energy bills.
What is an MPAN?
An MPAN is a Meter Point Administration Number. It is used to identify an electricity supply. It is usually a 21-digit unique code.
What is an MPRN?
An MPRN is a Meter Point Reference Number. It is used to identify a gas supply. It is usually an 11-digit numeric code.
What is the difference between MPAN/MPRN and a Meter Serial Number (MSN)?
The MPAN/MPRN identifies the supply and does not change. The Meter Serial Number (MSN) identifies the specific, physical meter itself.
Your MPAN/MPRN are not found on your meter, but the MSN is. Your MSN will change if you ever get your meter replaced.
Your MSN is usually a 9 to 12-digit code stamped close to the barcode on your meter. Electricity MSNs generally begin with ‘F’ for traditional meters and 14P/15P on smart meters.
Why do suppliers ask for your MPAN/MPRN?
Your MPAN/MPRN is a unique identifier that allows suppliers to gain access to your supply point.
The MPAN/MPRN helps suppliers identify the correct supply point, ensuring energy usage and billing are assigned to the right premises.
You will most commonly be asked for your MPAN or MPRN when switching suppliers, requesting a quote, moving premises or resolving a billing issue.
Where can I find my MPAN/MPRN?
The MPAN tends to be located on the second page on an electricity bill. It will look like a two-line grid with the letter ‘S’ in the left-hand box. Each of the other boxes will contain several numbers. And yes, they all mean something. More on that to follow.
The MPRN is slightly harder to spot. It can pop up in numerous places on a gas bill. It will be referred to as an MPRN, Meter Point Reference Number or Meter Point Reference. It is 11 digits long and only contains numbers.
Both codes can also be found on your online account, but they are not found on any physical equipment, including your meter.
What do the numbers mean on an MPAN?
MPAN numbers may look random, but there’s meaning behind every digit.

-
Profile class: The type of supply, usually numbers ranging from 00 to 08. Domestic meters typically come with 01, while businesses are commonly 00 or 03.
-
Meter time switch code: The MTC shows whether the supply is a single rate, Economy 7 or other variable type.
-
Line loss factor class: The LLFC is used to calculate distribution charges that take the electricity from the main grid to your site.
-
Distributor ID: Each area of the country is assigned a two-digit code. For example, 13 is Merseyside & North Wales. This shows which operator handles your supply.
-
Meter Point ID number: This is a unique number within your distribution area that means suppliers can track your specific supply.
-
Check digit: This is a three-digit code calculated from your distributor and meter point IDs to ensure both numbers are accurate.
Unlike MPANs, MPRNs do not contain separate components that identify supply characteristics. They simply act as a unique reference number for a gas supply point.
