UK Sports Venues Where The Only Colour That Matters is 'Green'
As part of the Troo Sports ethos, our aim is not only to reduce costs and provide funding to sports clubs throughout the UK, but it is important that we assist in clubs becoming ‘greener’. Some of the leading venues in the UK are ahead of the game on this already. The venues in our list below are “top of the league” when it comes to sustainability!
Lord’s manages their food ordering for the facility in order to minimise the amount of food waste produced at the ground. Any unused food that remains edible is offered to the surrounding communities through Lord’s partnership with a redistribution charity – providing that food hygiene standards are met. Lord’s also have an innovative process in place for any inedible foods. Foods not fit for human consumption is kept in separate storage and is then mechanically dewatered on site. This reduces the weight and volume of the food and is sent for anaerobic digestion. This process produces bio-gas which is then used to generate electricity. ‘Howzat’ for sustainability!
Spurs’ new stadium aims to be as green as possible and as of 2021 the Lilywhites are the greenest club in the Premier League. The club, as a whole have a strong green agenda and have a partnership in place with a company that will supply a solid-state battery compromising of a 3MW capacity at the stadium. This will balance and guarantee the venue’s power supply. A full sustainable energy solution including solar panels and a custom microgrid will also be designed for the clubs training centre. By putting these green processes in place, it is going to help the club accelerate towards becoming a net zero carbon football club.
As the “home of football”, events at Wembley have a huge impact on the environment. The venue fully understands their corporate and social responsibility to minimise negative impacts by creating a designated Events Sustainability Management System which is aligned to international best practice. Wembley use their ESMS coordinate and improve their approach to sustainability for major events at the stadium such as concerts, England Internationals and Stadium Boxing Events. In 20219 Wembley Stadium was awarded with the renowned international standard ISO 20121 for the Events Sustainability Management System that they have in place.
Home of League 2 outfit Forest Green Rovers, the world’s most sustainable football club, The New Lawn is as green as the club’s colours. The entire club is powered by 100% green energy supplied by Ecotricity. A lot of the energy used by the club is from their on-site generation methods such as the solar panels they have installed on the stadium roofing and the solar tracker at the entrance to the ground. Rovers recommend sustainable travel to and from their home fixtures and provide EV charging points at The New Lawn. The club have gone one step further in their sustainability with the electric “mow-bot” they use – cutting the grass with a GPS-directed, solar-powered lawn mower!
