Yet bills can be complex, charges don’t always reflect reality, and many hotels are still paying on default terms without realising it. Since Scotland deregulated its non-household water market in 2008, every hotel has had the right to choose a retailer and often to get a service that fits the way you operate better than the standard.
There are more than 220,000 eligible business premises in Scotland’s non-household market. Despite this, research shows that only a small proportion actively switch. Industry sources suggest the majority remain on default terms, often because they’ve never revisited water since moving in or opening their doors.
Hotel managers and owners have plenty on their plates. Water feels dependable, and unlike energy, it doesn’t usually spark urgent headlines. But bills are often full of lines that don’t invite easy checking: standing charges, drainage, wastewater, trade effluent. For multi-site groups, the thought of adding complexity can also act as a brake.
The result is that many hotels, perhaps yours included, are still on the incumbent’s default terms. That’s not unusual, but it does mean potential missed opportunities to align costs and service with the way your hotel actually runs.
Clarity on charges
Fixed charges are linked to meter size, while drainage is tied to your property’s rateable value. If either is out of step, you could be paying more than you should.
Support with efficiency
Retailers can provide advice on reducing use in kitchens, laundries, pools and guest rooms, helping trim costs without affecting the guest experience.
You can carry out these checks inhouse, but many hotel teams choose to work with a utility consultant who can:
That way, you get clarity, choice, and a plan that fits your operation, without adding more to your already busy workload.
Troo offers a free bill check for Scottish hotels. Share your recent bills and a meter read, and we’ll show you if you’re on a default contract, whether your charges are correct, and what better options might look like.
