British Gas Lite is a streamlined business energy service from British Gas. According to British Gas, Lite is a “fixed price gas and electricity service for small businesses.”
Compared to other business energy suppliers and tariffs, prices from British Gas Lite are typically very competitive. That’s because the service is based online, so customers don’t pay administration fees. You can manage your account from any device, at any time of day.
When you sign up with British Gas Lite, you can manage your payment method and view your balance in your account portal. This can be a great option for small businesses looking to keep costs low.
With British Gas Lite, you pay by variable direct debit. British Gas Lite doesn’t accept other payment methods.
Other perks of British Gas Lite
On top of competitive business energy prices, British Gas Lite customers receive an electricity smart meter at no extra cost. This might be a perk – or it might add to your bills!
A smart meter sends real-time meter readings to your energy supplier via the internet. This means your energy supplier always has accurate electricity readings for your business. This might reduce your bill, if your supplier has been over-estimating how much you use. But if your supplier has charged you based on under-estimates, you could be in for a financial shock.
Smart meter accuracy is a big benefit, however. It means you’ll always end up paying what you owe – no more and no less. You won’t face anymore sudden price increases or have to chase your energy supplier for rebates. If you’re looking for predictability in your costs, a smart meter could be the way to go if you don’t already have one.
Complaints process at British Gas Lite
It’s easy to access the Business Customer Service Team at British Gas Lite through your online account portal – just use the webchat function. You’ll quickly get an answer to most of your queries.
To make a complaint, follow this process:
- Use the webchat function in your account portal as normal and ask them to put you in touch with a manager.
- British Gas Lite will acknowledge your complaint within 24 hours.
- They’ll get back to you within 10 working days.
Some complaints can’t be resolved easily. If you have not come to a resolution with British Gas Lite within eight weeks, you can follow a couple of different paths:
- Pursue your complaint with the Ombudsman Services: Energy if you’re a micro business.
- Seek independent legal advice if you work for a larger business.
- You can contact Citizens Advice at any time in the process to make sure you understand your rights.
Remember, most people won’t need to raise a complaint at all.
What is a micro business?
A micro business:
- Uses less than 100,000 kWh of electricity a year
- Uses less than 293,000 kWh of gas a year
- Has fewer than 10 employees (or their full-time equivalent) and a yearly turnover, or yearly balance sheet, not more than 2 million Euros.
- The consumption threshold applies to the fuel being supplied
Make sure you don’t meet these criteria before you commission lawyers to act on your behalf. These criteria cover a high percentage of British businesses, and there’s a good chance you’ll be able to pursue your complaint with Ombudsman Services.
