Case study: Leek Town FC is taking control of energy costs

Leek Town FC is a well-established club in the Northern Premier League, recently earning promotion to the Premier Division. More than just a football team, the club is a key part of the local community, running 3 men’s teams, 2 women’s teams and 24 junior teams from under-7s to under-18s. There are also introductory sessions for young children, ensuring that boys and girls can get involved in the game from an early age.
The club’s facilities are in use 7 days a week, which means energy is a big running cost. As prices soared, finding a smarter way to manage energy became a priority.
The challenge
Like many organisations, Leek Town FC felt the impact of increasing energy prices, particularly following the war in Ukraine. The club’s existing energy broker provided price updates but little in the way of practical solutions. Leek Town needed more than just information; they needed a strategy to keep costs under control.
The solution
Troo took a different approach. Instead of just securing a new contract, we looked at ways for the club to cut costs by reducing energy consumption.
This included:
- Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency
- Planning the installation of a solar panel system to provide a cleaner, lower-cost electricity source for the club
- Introducing EV charging points to generate additional income
Beyond this, we also offered direct support through Account Manager, Mark Boyce, and his colleague, Aaron Sheriff. As well as helping the club find the most suitable energy contracts, we introduced Leek Town to potential sponsors through business club meetings.
The outcome
Leek Town’s current energy contracts run until November 2025, but planning ahead means they’re in a strong position to benefit from these changes as soon as possible. With a clear strategy in place, they expect to see lower costs and greater energy efficiency in the years to come.
Client feedback
“Working together with Troo has changed Leek Town’s outlook on energy. We have become more aware of areas to save energy usage, while at the same time looking forward to reduced energy costs. Leek Town feel that the relationship with Troo is just starting and look forward to a long-term relationship which will benefit the club.”
