Helping Belthorn Academy get the most from their solar investment

Belthorn Academy Primary School had invested in solar panels several years ago but hadn't received any financial benefit.

They approached Troo for help understanding why and to identify savings across their wider energy and utility bills.

The situation

The school had installed solar panels but hadn't seen any financial return or clarity on how the panels were benefiting their energy use. They were also unsure whether their other utility charges were correct or competitive, including electricity, water, and VAT charges.

How we helped

After an initial consultation, we undertook a detailed review of their bills across energy, water, VAT, and capacity charges:

  • VAT and CCL review
We found they’d been incorrectly charged 20% VAT and Climate Change Levy (CCL), despite qualifying for a reduced 5% VAT and full CCL exemption due to their status.
  • Solar review
After gaining access to their solar portal and speaking to the provider, we confirmed the solar panels were generating power correctly and significantly reducing the school’s grid consumption, even though direct payments hadn’t been made. We started conversations to ensure proper recognition of this benefit and potential payments.
  • Capacity charge correction
Their site’s electricity meter capacity (kVA) was set far too high. We arranged for it to be reduced with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), cutting unnecessary monthly charges.
  • Water contract renewal
The school had a rolling water contract, which was costing more than necessary. We found them more competitive renewal options.

We provided clear, practical recommendations:

  • Extending their electricity contract to protect against market volatility.
  • Claiming a full rebate for incorrectly charged VAT and CCL.
  • Adjusting meter capacity (kVA) to accurately reflect usage and cut charges.
  • Working proactively with their solar provider to unlock financial returns.
  • Renewing their water contract at a better rate.

The outcome

Belthorn Academy Primary School received immediate and ongoing benefits:

  • A rebate of over £2,500 for incorrect VAT and CCL charges.
  • Annual water contract savings.
  • Reduced monthly electricity costs due to correctly adjusted capacity charges.
